Visit of the Committee on EU Affairs of the Senate of the Czech Republic to Sweden

From 30 January to 1 February 2023, the Committee on European Union Affairs of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic visited Sweden. The aim of the visit was to exchange views on the main current EU issues, i.e. the ongoing assistance to Ukraine, security in Europe, the energy situation, increasing competitiveness and respect for fundamental democratic values, in the context of the Czech and Swedish presidencies of the Council of the European Union.

The Czech delegation, led by the Chairman of the Committee on EU Affairs of the Senate of the Czech Republic Vladimír Vilímec, met with the EU Committee of the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm from 30 January to 1 February 2023, where the Chairman of the EU Committee of the Swedish Parliament, Hans Wallmark, began by thanking the Czech side for the very well managed Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU and congratulating them on the well-organized presidential elections. Next, the Committee met with the State Secretary to the Minister of State for the EU, Christian Danielsson, who discussed the three main priorities on which the Swedish side believes the EU should focus: 1) Ukraine (with all aspects of political, humanitarian, economic and defense cooperation); 2) increasing the EU's competitiveness; and 3) addressing the issue of the surge of migrants into the EU. Next, the Committee met with the Swedish Institute of International Relations and its Director, Jacob Hallgren.

During the discussions, the Swedish side repeatedly mentioned the very good work of the Czech Presidency with a number of concrete results. Both delegations also agreed on the importance and responsibility to continue the efforts made after the end of both Presidencies.

The Ambassador Anita Grmelová and Deputy Ambassador Martin Bašta accompanied the delegation.

The visit of the Senate Committee on EU Affairs followed the Conference of the Committees on European Affairs of the Member States of the European Union (COSAC), which was organized by the Swedish EU Presidency and attended by Czech representatives.
